Why DOES man create?

"It only takes a cup of water to cover 2 miles of fog"

On this third day of class many agenda items were covered.  First, I have to say that my students in ALL my classes have shown exceptionally good manners.  As I have explained the concepts of our journey this year, they have been attentive, quiet, and have exhibited much interest.  Today we discussed the 1st cycle's overall lesson...the study of LINE and BALANCE.  I talked about ELEMENTS OF ART as being the TOOLS we use to create art, and LINE being one of them.  I talked about the PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN as being the RULES that we have for better use of the tools, and BALANCE being one of them.  The analogy I feel makes it easiest to understand is a discussion of football...all those guys out there on lines, wearing colors, textures, etc. need to know what it is they should do in order for the game to go on.  I  introduced them to a set of art books to see what they could discover about this cycle's tool and rule.  They will be testing themselves over what they find, so they needed to take notes in their log book.
Toward the end of the period, I set up the projector and we watched WHY MAN CREATES.  This is an award winning movie done in the 60's that explores man's fascination with the world and what drives him to create, whether in art, science, or industry.  Thomas Edison, Earnest Hemingway, and Albert Einstein are pictured and quoted.  As Einstein said, "as one grows older, one sees the impossibility of imposing your will on the chaos with brute force.  But if you're patient there may come that moment when, while eating an apple, the solution presents itself politely and says, here I am".  I have shown this movie several times over the years, starting back in the 70's.  This 50 year old movie, directed by Saul Bass, is still one of the best at explaining that age old question, why DOES man create.  "Among all the variety of human expression, a thread of connection, a common mark can be seen; that urge to look into oneself and out at the world and say this is what I am.  I am unique.  I am here.  I am."
All of my forms I needed copying were finished so I picked them up to hand out next week.  My third period class and I went down to the book room and checked out a class set of the current art textbook.
I can see us easily getting into the throes of this self-dircted process by next Thursday.  I am totally excited by the prospect of what this approach to my curriculum will bring forth.  I'll try to get some more forms up on the other site asap.  Having a bit of trouble getting the forms loaded in.  Till next time.

The Future of Creativity in the 21st Century

I ran across this video from another blog, from CCartanddesign in Omaha, Ne. It is an interview with Daniel Pink discussing his book, DRIVE. This book was introduced to me by my daughter, Angela, who is the IT teacher at the International School Wiesbaden in Germany. I read the book this summer and it was the inspiration/catalyst for the development of the Student Directed Art Curriculum I am discussing/presenting in this blog. After listening to Daniel Pink, much of what you see in my blog will take on new meaning. The Future of Creativity in the 21st Century

CARE SURVEY link

I set up a new blog site where I will post the forms and stuff that the students will be involved with.  I didn't want to weigh this blog down with forms and stuff that you may not be interested in reading.  As my children bring up now and then, "ask dad what time is it and he'll tell you how to build a watch". So the link below will take you to the other site and THERE you will find the gears and whirlygigs...

Class Day #2...Getting Started

Unpacking books I have had stored in the garage for 3 years I ran across a yellow legal pad on the bottom of a plastic bin.  On the top page of the pad I found a bunch of quotes I had thought to be  important/symbolic/meaningful enough to write down.  I decided that I would begin each blog with one of these quotes and add to them so each blog would have a new one.  So:
"Its less what I do...its who I am"
My objective today was to get three things accomplished.  I had purchased spiral notebooks for $.15 at Target and had a stack of left over, used, spirals from years past.  Students had a choice; either buy a new one for that price, or receive a used one for free.  Almost all of the students opted bo buy a new one.  I guess no one likes "hand-me-downs", eh?  Once that was dealt with, I handed out the "CARE SURVEY" questions I made up yesterday.  There are 43 questions ranging from what music do I like to where do I find beauty.  I emphasized these questions/answers were for the students' eyes only.  I wanted them to spend just a little time in self-reflection.  They kept the sheet of questions to refer back to if they want.  The students concentrated and seemed to immerse themselves in the process.
The second activity was to create a portfolio to keep "work in progress" of various sorts.  They will hold a piece of paper 18" X 24" and fit nicely into the drawers I have set aside for them.  I talked about where their personal art materials will be kept locked up and that they could begin bringing them in.
With about 25 minutes left in the period, I set up the projector and introduced them to the movie, WHY MAN CREATES.  This is an award winning movie from the 60's I have shown students through the years and deals with the whole idea of creativity.  There are 7 segments and we watched the first two which are THE EDIFICE and FOOLING AROUND.  From their responses, I could tell that they were getting a lot out of the presentation.
I showed my students my new "toy", which is a holder for my iphone to use as a camera.  While doing so I went ahead and shot a pic of the folders on the table.  This time I will put the pic in a bit smaller so those viewing this blog won't need to wait so long to have it come up.  Learning curve, eh?
I gave my students my blog site address today.  I hope they will be able to go there and keep up with what is going on, as well as their parents.  I hope I can think of enough so that it will be interesting.  Time will tell, eh?

Day off...working on "self exam" questions

Today is my "off" day, B day...took some books to school and picked up tablet I left with the survey questions I want students to answer tomorrow...While there I took a couple of pictures of my classroom.
There were no students in the room, but just for your background info, this is where it all happens.

2010-11 Day 1...Introduction to Classes

Our classes began today at Skyline in the usual logistical manner.  Collecting filled out forms, alphabetizing the student's forms, initialing their schedule sheets, having them make out two copies of the schedule in case they lose the original, etc.
When all the dust was settled, I began talking with them about their backgrounds...what year they are in...whether they are neighborhood students or cluster...if cluster, which one.  A number are advanced science, a few culinary, a couple photography, and a couple graphic design and architecture.  All in all, a nice divergent group of students.  The numbers of students are large, but I was told today that they will be leveling soon and the numbers will drop.  We'll see.
I began our discussion of the course by talking about Daniel Pink's book DRIVE, that I read this summer and that was a major motivator for developing the course we will follow this year in my Art I classes.  I am also reading GOOD TO GREAT and ZEN AND THE ART OF MOTORCYCLE MAINTENANCE.
I talked about the concept of FINITE and INFINITE intelligence.  How some people think that they only have so much brain power and that's it.  How some believe that there is nothing they can't achieve if they only try hard enough.  I talked about the "carrot and stick" motivational tools that society has had in place for many centuries.  We are motivated by the possible tasty future or the harsh whip of reality if we choose not to move along.  I got into the difference between EXTERNAL and INTRINSIC MOTIVATION.  I discussed with a couple of students who play soccer on Saturdays why they got up and worked so hard while their friends were in bed or watching TV.  The whole idea of feeing good about oneself came out in the discussion.  I told them about research done with monkeys and puzzles, small children and paintings, fine artists and commercial artists and how often when intrinsic motivation was replaced with external motivation, the quality of the performance was reduced.  We talked about the idea of QUALITY and the idea of CARING.  I told them I didn't CARE how much they KNOW until I KNOW how much they CARE.  This idea came straight out of "Zen....".
I explained to them that this year they would be involved in a class where the three elements that Pink talked about in DRIVE were present...AUTONOMY...MASTERY...and PURPOSE.  They will be designing, researching, analyzing, testing, and evaluating EVERYTHING that they work on in this class.  They will be given all the forms necessary to accomplish this.  They will set their own goals, choose the subject, media, and expression, choose the size of final product, decide on the length of time they will need to accomplish their objective, and give themselves the grade they will receive on each work of art they create.  MY goal is to create a lifelong desire to continue learning about art while developing a sense of pride and accomplishment.
Each day the student will sit down for about 10 minutes at the end of the period and write in his/her log book...sort of a diary.  In it they will talk about any discussion/demonstrations I may have given, any video clips they were presented, any research they did, and an update on the progress they have made toward their finished art work.  When they return the following class day, they can review their log and find out where to pick up, what page and what book they left off reading, etc.
This is just the first day...I talked all period...I hope to update this blog each day while students are working on their log.  I'd like to get the student's parents to log in and see updates on work that is being done that I post here.  I want to shoot some small video pieces  and post them for them to see.   I will be giving them an opportunity to "teach" a lesson to the rest of the class, either a demo or a lesson they have read about.  I want to video these and post them as well.
I have never written a blog before.  When I was an exchange teacher to Scotland in 1995-96 I kept a daily diary of my activities for the entire year.  I will be motivated to keep this blog current by nature of making so many parents and students aware of it.  I will probably not be quite so wordy in the future.  I am planning to post some of the forms I have developed in case anyone wants to try this type of teaching for themselves.  With the odds being 30K to 1 that any two students at any given time will be doing the same activity at the same time, I fully expect to be kept quite occupied during the class period.
Wish me Luck.
